David Bowie is, aside from The Beatles, and Velvet Underground, the most influencial artist of all time. His work, (especially in his heyday in the 70s still stands today as one of the most amazing timeframes of any artist. The rankings only reflect my personal opinion of every album. I think they're all great, and I listened to every one of them and enjoy them. Just because I rank one above another means I dislike the lower one. I have so many memories attached to his music, I truly enjoy almost all of his work (yes, even his 80s output, though listening to Tonight requires LOTS of patience, I would only recommend that album to hardcore fans), I would only put The Cure, and REM up there as far as my personal faves. David Bowie has always been innovative, changing styles, changing themes and working with some incredible musicians throughout his career such as Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, Carlos Alomar, Rick Wakeman, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Nile Rodgers, Adrian Belew, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Luther Vandross, Gail Ann Dorsey, Reeves Gabrels, The Sales brothers, . No one album is like the rest and in the 70s he explored VERY different avenues, including glam rock, Krautrock, funk, you name it! He was one of the main influenced for punk, goth rock, new wave, electronic music. he helped bring ambient music into the mainstream. Very few come close to his influence. I'll be ranking these from low(lol!)est to highest. Let's start! There are several lists like this online, I'm not going by other people's opinion of these albums, just my personal take on them.

This album never fully grabbed me. It's part 3 of the infamous Berlin trilogy, along with Low and Heroes which we will get to soon. Lodger was the last album Bowie would record in the 70s, and end to that era if you will. After exploring all his different ideas with over 10 studio albums in the 70s alone, here Bowie seems bored. There is a distance in the songs, an escapism, it's a distant record that is a tad hard to relate to. He even rehashed some old ideas.. Red Money is the same song as Sister Midnight, which was on Iggy Pop's Lust for Life album, which they both recorded together.. Some songs you might recognize are Boys Keep Swinging, which Bowie famously played on SNL along with Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias, and Look Back In Anger which has guitarist Carlos Alomar seriously shredding.
Bowie's soul album. After recording Diamond Dogs (which does have hints of soul at times) this was Bowie trying another persona, white soul boy. This album features backing vocals from future superstar Luthor Vandross and features a memorable appearance by the legendary John Lennon on the hit song Fame. It's Bowie putting on nother disguise. he does a mediocre cover of the Beatles Across the Universe and the title track is one I usually skip, Way too many saxophones in here and it sounds conformist and not as edgy as his previous and later albums. Still, a great effort and still better than most other music out there. Not an album I revisit often but still a decent record.
Sidenote. I feel that most Bowie album sound better on vinyl, aside from Heroes and Aladdin Sane, I own all his 70s albums on vinyl. This and Low has all instrumental tracks on the 2nd side. It works well. Heroes, aside from the amazing title track, which talks of a couple meeting at the Berlin Wall despite the violence and separation between East and west Berlin is one of the most romantic songs ever. The album doesn't quite grab me like the rest. I don't listen to it much. I do like Robert Fripp's guitar work here and the song Moss Garden is a true work of art. It's an instrumental piece featuring a koto, which is a Japanese string instrument. I would also mention this, along with Low and Lodger were part of what is called the "Berlin" trilogy... albums Bowie recorded with Brian Eno, while going to Berlin to kick his drug habit...though Lodger was mainly recorded in Switzerland.
Released after Ziggy Stardust, this was Bowie's first album as an actual rock star. The title of this record was a pun of the words, a lad insane, which was inspired by David Bowie's brother, Terry, who was schizophrenic. This record has to do with travelling and Bowie's duality of mind, represented by the lightning bolt on the cover. He said it had to do with the conflict of being up on stage and at the same time, not wanting to be on the buses surrounded by strange people. A very interesting record, less disjointed than Man Who Sold The World, yet more rocking than Hunky Dory. It's an ode to fame, with songs like Watch That Man, yet a warning of it's pitfalls, such as in Jean Genie, inspired by his friend, and sometimes recording partner, Iggy Pop. Some of my favorites include Time, with it's awesome keyboard, and of course, A great album in parts, but the parts are greater than the whole. A good album, but at times the production is a bit off, vocals are buried in the mix in certain songs. Still, interesting ideas and concept.
Released in 1970, this album kicked off the 70s for David Bowie and was the first album to featur the future Spiders From Mars. This featured Mick Ronson on guitar for the first time. What I love about this album is the constant change in themes. This is when Bowie was heavily influenced by literary authors such as Nietzsche, Kafka, and Crowley. Songs about supermen, computers and his brother's mental illness are all on this record. On a personal note this was the first Bowie album that truly spoke to me. All The Madmen was always one of my favorite songs, it's about celebrating insanity as a way of uniqueness, I love that concept. The title track was famously covered by Nirvana, and while I like Nirvana's version, Bowie's version feels cold, distant. This whole album is rather dark and scifi like. The song After All is a sorta lullaby to all the adult children out there, the hippies, the disconnected ones. Brilliant, with echoes of heavy metal, coutesy of guitarist Mick Ronson. The Supermen is another great song about this race of superhumans who existed before time, possible inspired by H.P. Lovecraft or Nietzsche. There is an otherworldy feel to this record, sorta goth-like at times. Not one of Bowie's bestsellers, but an album I constantly go back to.
Released after Aladdin Sane, this has been said to be the end of Bowie's glam rock phase. With this album, Bowie disbanded the Spiders from Mars and decided to play guitar himself. This was meant to be a concept album based of George Orwell's novel 1984, but Bowie was not granted permission, but still there are songs referencing it, such as 1984, and Big Brother. This album is what I would call apocalyptic disco. There are hints of his future soul work, mixed with glam rock. Really interesting stuff. His most popular song here is Rebel Rebel, with it's Rolling Stones like riff, and of course the title track. This album was the first to employ the cut-up method, popularized by William S. Burroughs and used on the song Sweet Thing. A very scary record, full of visual imagery that requires several listens to really understand the concept and story. Brilliant record.
What I find most hilarious about this is that David Bowie has no recollection of recording this! This was released in 1987, right before his Berlin trilogy and right after the soulfull Young Americans. Bowie was heavily into drugs, especially cocaine, and like Man Who Sold The World, the lyrics are heavily influenced by Nietzsche, Crowley, mythology, and religion. At times, a very numb album, and at times very funky and discolike. This album was the ultimate contridiction. If I had any complaints, I wish they has recorded more songs. This only has 6 songs, but what amazing songs. I did a previous list of best bowie songs and the title track was near the top. So epic at over 10 minutes long, full of religious imagery, more Crowley references (white stains), and Kaballah influences. It's all over the place but very cynical. Also on the album is the song Golden Years, which Bowie played on Soul Train where he was drugged out of his mind! This whole period of his life was very dark as Bowie himself admitted. But what great songs. Golden Years is about the limelight, etc.. Word on A Wing is another song about religion, guilt, prayer, redemption. All his years experimenting with different genres, looks, etc.. really pay off here. I also like his cover of Wild Is the Wind, it fits really well on this album.
The first part of the Berlin trilogy and one of my favorites, This was right after the drug filled highs of Station to Station. This album was about Bowie getting off drugs, recording this in Berlin with Brian Eno. After all the chaos his life had become, Low was the perfect soundtrack to sobriety. Very minimal lyrics on the first side and all instrumental songs on the second. Perfect for relaxing and thinking. The first side drives hope that point of getting off drugs and features songs about boredom and depression, but still there is hope. Side two is full of soft synths that make you feel that hope. The album is full of broken shards of songs. This record has to be the most influential Bowie record. His vocal delivery is a tad lower than other albums. He doesn't quite rach those high notes often here. This was recorded at the same time that Bowie was producing Iggy Pop's albums The Idiot and Lust for Life, which he also helped cowrite some songs. Iggy Pop does backing vocals on this album's What the world. These are not traditional songs and to be honest it took me a while to really see it's beauty. It emphasizes mood and feeling over traditional songs and structures. It a bold record and one of my all time favorites. Always Crashing in the Same Car is full of reckless abandon and Be My Wife was Bowie's plea to save his failing marriage. Always emotional, bleak, and hopeful. one of the best.
Bowie's rock star album. His most popular from the 70s. This was a rock opera that doesn't sound like one. The songs flow together in a way that doesn't feel trite or cobbled together. This is Bowie's finest hour. Released in 1972, right after Hunky Dory, this is about Bowie the space alien, coming to earth and his ultimate demise. Five Years tells of the coming end times. a warning to the future, and starman has one of the most infectious choruses ever. The title track is one of the most popular David Bowie songs and with reason. That opening riff, the weird, surreal lyrics, everything about it is perfection. His tribute to Mark Bolan of T. Rex entitled Lady Stardust is very sentimental and a fitting tribute. What really stands out here is the vocals. Bowie has never sounded better, especially when reaching those desperate notes in the closer Rock N Roll Suicide. The one strange thing about the album is how well it flows together, as opposed to other Bowie albums which explore many different genres and avenues. It is perhaps his most cohesive sounding album. This album made Bowie a household name and a true superstar for years to come. Look for the version which contains two bonus tracks, Velvet Goldmine and Sweet Head. two superb songs that should have been on this album.
This album is essential to any collection. not just a David Bowie one. This was released right before Ziggy Stardust and right after The Man Who Sold the World. It's that nice sweet spot in between. Not quite as rocking as either, this has many folk elements and touches of piano thrown in. Bowie continues his Crowley and Nietzsche obsession with the song Quicksand, which talks about the golden dawn and the concept of superman. Why I ranked this at #1 is the song Life On Mars. Bowie's best song. Soft piano, Bowie's trademark surreal imagery about lawmen beating up the wrong guy, etc... Many tributes run throughout this album. The songs Andy Warhol, Song for Bob Dylan...Queen Bitch is a tribute to the rock and roll of The Velvet Underground. and the song Bewlay Brothers is a fitting tribute to his older schizophrenic brother Terry, who Bowie would later write about in other songs. I really love the chanted lyrics in this song and weird effects on Bowie's voice. Changes is the most wellknown song on here, about growing up and changing, as well as Oh! You pretty things. Kooks is one of my personal favorites, an anthem for all the weirdos. so many great songs, a mixture of his early folk and the rock that was to come. A beautiful album cover. Just perfection at every turn. If you heard Ziggy and didn't care for it, go listen to Hunky Dory.
Dead Can Dance released their latest album, Anastasis last year. What an amazing album! I had the chance to see them at the Gibson Amphitheater last year and it remains one of the most amazing shows of my life. I just found out yesterday that they are closing down that amphitheater after 40 years to build a new ride for Universal. It's sad. I will have fond memories of that night Dead Can Dance were there. Their sets are always amazing. This one relies pretty heavily on songs from their latest album, but they still play some old songs. Check it out:
Dinosaur Jr might as well be called Dinosaur St at this point. It was very strange to see J Mascis with a full head of grey hair, but it was still suiting for them considering their age. It showed how far they had come. They were one of the main highlights at Coachella. They even played a song from their first cassette, back in the early 80s. It was a tight set and it was nice to see an 80s band still have it. They also played some stuff from the 90s when Lou Barlow wasn't in the band (Out There, Feel the Pain). A great set!
Another great show I saw last year was the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Staples Center. The Hall of Fame group closed Sunday's set with a very long setlist. They played songs from almost all their albums and were tight as ever. Check out the video
Coachella is an annual music festival held in Indio, California which brings together bands of all genres to one place. Previous headliners have included Nine Inch Nails, Morrissey, Love and Rockets, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, and Rage Against the Machine. This year's lineup featured an array of bands from new wave, to punk, to hiphop, to EDM, to indie rock, and so on. Here are some of the best sets this year. I will add more as I find them.

Social Distortion
The 1980s were huge for alternative music, and you could not avoid the classic Violent Femmes hit, Blister in the Sun. That song was off their 1983 debut selftitled album. The Violent Femmes have not played in over 5 years, but reunited at Coachella where they played their entire debut album in its entirety. Check out the setlist and video here:
There were rumors of there finally being a Smiths reunion at Coachella, sadly it was not to be, but Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr did a set promoting his new album and did a cover of the Smiths classic, There is A Light That Never Goes Out and also performing the Jam classic with singer Paul Weller, Town Called Malice.
On David Bowie's 66th birthday, he returned with a surprising single, Where Are We Now, which was released on Bowie's 66th birthday. David Bowie's last album was 2003's Reality, and aside from one-off cameos with Arcade Fire and Pink Floyd, we haven't heard anything from him. Most assumed he was retired and would never release another album. This, from a man who in the 70s averaged an album per year. (and what a track record!). When news broke out of a new Bowie album, one wonders whether it is necessary, or how it will fit in today's culture. One thing one must remember about Bowie, he was never about fitting in. Always a trendsetter and always ahead of the game and unpredictable, this album reinvents Bowie once again. Some, like, Where are We now, are more reflective, a shoutout to his 70s Berlin work, (also the cover is his 1977 album, Heroes, with a white square over it, further alluding to his 70s work). Other songs are more rocking, such as the 2nd single, The Stars Are Out tonight (catch the video for it with actress Tilda Swinton), which is way more upbeat and rocking. What I love about this album is that it almost plays like a greatest hits collection, in which every song is completely different and offers something new every time you hear it. When you look at popular music today, you wonder where Bowie fits in. He's completely different than the manufactured pop stars, gangsta rappers and hipsters dominating the charts today. Despite that, this album went to #1 in over 12 countries, including his first #1 in the UK. In the Us it debuted at #2, behind Bon Jovi, which is still commendable. This album rocks and sways and it destined to be on many album of the year charts. There is a little something for everyone here. While not quite as bombastic as Hunky Dory, and Ziggy Stardust, this album will rank among Bowie's best! Check out these tracks.
Depeche Mode's 13th fulllength album, Delta Machine will be released on March 26, here in the US but you can listen to it about a week in advance on iTunes at the following link.

Here is what Dave Gahan had to say about the new album. “When we hit a wall where we realize the album is beginning to sound too
normal, we’ll mess it up and really give it that organic Depeche Mode
Sound. Delta Machine is no different, and I can’t wait for all of our fans to hear it.”

My opinion on the album is mixed. There are some good songs on it, it's an improvement over Sounds of the Universe but it's no Violator or Black Celebration. Maybe the songs will grow on me but we will have to wait and see. In other news, Depeche Mode also played some songs on Letterman. Check it out!
Peter Murphy, who continues to have a successful solo career (his latest album being 2011's Ninth) is going on tour again. This tour will mark the 35th anniversary of his former band, Bauhaus, and to celebrate, he will be touring the United States and Europe and performing all Bauhaus material. Bauhaus lasted from 1978-1983, after which Peter Murphy embarked on a solo career, and the rest of the band went on tour to form Love and Rockets, and Tones on Tail, with guitarist Daniel Ash releasing a few solo albums, and David J releasing a few as well. Bauhaus had a few reunions in 1998 and toured from 2005 (performing at that year's annual Coachella festival), touring with Nine Inch Nails in 2006, and releasing an album (Go Away White in 2008). The band seems to be broken up for good but I could see another reunion in the future. This is not the first time Peter has performed all Bauhaus material (he did a show in Santa Ana, California doing all Bauhaus songs and another where he performed the entire Deep album). This tour will be called the Mr. Moonlight tour: Celebrating 35 years of Bauhaus. Here is the press release:

In a news release,
Murphy says, “Since 2006, I have included my Bauhaus work into my solo
work as a way of tipping my hat to my own audience…those who discovered
my early work as well as new and old fans of those years strong wishes
to hear the music of my band crackle and spark in the live arena. Being
the foremost advocate of this Bauhaus work, I decided the time was ripe
to at last give a pure Bauhaus experience in one Mr. Moonlight world
tour. Mr. Moonlight is alive and well, don’t doubt it.”
Last Tuesday, David Bowie premiered his new single, The Stars (Are Out Tonight), which is the 2nd single from his upcoming album, The Next Day, due out in March. This follows last month's surprise single "Where Are We Now?". Unlike that song, The Stars (Are Out Tonight) is a more upbeat song, which producer Tony Visconti promised that the new album would have more upbeat tracks. The song is good, but what's most interesting is the music video. The video sees Bowie and actress Tilda Swinton (We Need To Talk About Kevin, The Deep End, Michael Clayton), portraying a couple who are being stalked by these creepy neighbors next store, portrayed by models, Andrej Pejic and Saskia de Brauw. The video is directed by Floria Sigismondi (who directed the movie The Runaways, as well as directing music videos for Bowie, Marilyn Manson, The Cure, Leonard Cohen, Bjork and many others), The video features her trademark, jittery, stopmotion camerawork, and is truly a work of art. Watch the video here:

Skinny Puppy, the Canadian industrial group who have been making music since the early 80s (and featured Bill Leeb from Frontline Assembly for a short while) are releasing their next full length album, entitled Weapon on May 28th. This is their first album of new material since 2011's hanDover (OhGr's solo album unDeveloped was released earlier the same year). This new album, Weapon seems to be concerned with gun culture, judging by the press release and tracklisting. Skinny Puppy have always been a political band, engaging in issues such as equal rights, animal rights, etc... I look forward to this new album from Nivek OhGr and Cevin Key. Here is the press release and tracklisting..
.............................................................................................................
This stunning new album stands as a commentary on that which it is named
after, the Weapon, or more specifically, to the concurrent
glorification of the gun culture and simultaneous horror at the
devastation the gun can cause. Given this view, the pop undertones of
the albums opening wornin' and the compelling counterpoint of the vocals
and lyrics seem to reflect our mass media homogenization of an
instrument of death into an entertainment centerpiece. illisiT could
then be focusing on the authoritarian control applied to us under the
guise of protecting us from the criminal element. Though possibly it is
from the view of the average citizen, arming themselves against the
threat of each other. The more it is analyzed, the more it could be
pondered on varying levels. Perhaps the classic Skinny Puppy sounds
evident in the song solvent are a nod to not only the past, but to a
bleak Orwellian future, cycle of the weapon leads only to power in the
hands of those who have no fear of using it. Are we facing a 1984
dystopia filtered through a Kafkaesque lens? A world where the illusion
of power given to the private citizen afforded ownership of a weapon
distracts them from the Big Brother drones that watch overhead?

Parallels
could certainly be drawn from our own society to a track like
tsudanama, where the ever building menace of the mechanized rhythms
crashes over the listener in waves as the vocals at times seem to take
the tone of the voice of protest, standing against the inevitable tide
of the dystopian path of progress. Then does plasiCage implore the
listener to take up the fight against a gun worship culture and the
spiraling towards oligarchy? Or are the mournful tones terminal a
funeral dirge for our society?

Could the weapon be the gun, or
the one who wields it? Is it in creating an arms race among the
populace, or does it lie in the resulting authoritarian control given to
those who are charged with protecting us from ourselves? Is it the
power to profit from the cycle? Is it the singular act of speaking
against the conditioning of our thoughts and actions?

01. wornin'
02. illisiT
03. saLvo
04. gLowbeL
05. solvent
06. paragUn
07. survivalisto
08. tsudanama
09. plastiCage
10. terminal
The first is that, due to time and other obligations, the reviews will now be monthly, at varying times during the month. This will help me keep it focused and not as random as they have been. That being said, it has been a tremendous month for music with many new releases and news of upcoming albums. And we commence:

Bad Religion - True North

On this, the band's 16th album, Bad Religion rely on some old tricks. It is one of their shortest since 1988's Suffer, and maybe this is a good thing. Previous albums did have some filler tracks. (their last two especially), and the band has trimmed the fat. This record is one of their best since 1992's Generator. Tracks such as Robin Hood In Reverse, True North, and Everybody Knows. Greg Graffin has a degree in zoology and teaches at UCLA, and Bad Religion's trademark dictionary like vocabulary is still intact. You won't find many albums nowadays with words such as plutocrat, and declination. It's incredible that even at their old age, they still manage to make awesome music and have such energy.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Push the Sky Away

Nick Cave has several incarnations. the crazed screecher on the Birthday Party, the crooner and sometimes poet with the Bad Seeds, and the loud rock of Grinderman. This album, the band's 15th album recalls albums such as The Boatman's Call and No More Shall We Part. It's worth noting that this is their first album without Mick Harvey, who has been the Bad Seeds guitarist of nearly 30 years. Warren Ellis really shines on this album, and you can hear lush strings and lots of flutes. The first single, We No Who U R, is built on a drum machine, and sees Nick being the crooner once again. Another highlight is Jubilee Street, which is about a murdered prostitute (which would fit in on Murder Ballads), and one of my favorites is the song Higgs Boson Blues, in which Nick Cave makes references to everything from Lucifer, to Robert Johnson to Hanna Montana. Theses songs supposedly came about from "random Googling and reading wikipedia entries" and it's a fitting tribute to our information age, and sees Nick mellowing out, but still rocking. The closing title track may be one of the most beautiful songs Nick has ever done, and one of the best closers to an album ever. One word to describe this: hallucinogenic.

Depeche Mode are back with a new single. The calming song, "Heaven", off their soon to be released album Delta Machine, which comes out officially on March 26. Here is the album art:

It will be produced by Ben Hellier and mixed by Flood. I, for one, am happy to have Flood back at least in a mixing capacity. Flood recorded albums such as Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Adore by Smashing Pumpkins, Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails, and Becoming X by Sneaker Pimps, among several Depeche Mode Nick Cave and U2 albums. I hope this will turn out better than 2009's Songs of the Universe, which I felt was very bland. Here is their first single, Heaven.
I find this song kinda...whatever, perhaps it will grow on me, and here is another song that has leaked, Angel.

Havana Affair was a song originally by the punk group The Ramones. It appeared on their debut self-titled debut album released in 1976. One of their first political songs. It was basically about the US meddling in Cuban affairs. It's about a guy who had a productive job in Cuba picking bananas, now he's living in the US working for the CIA. It's a fun, short song with not many lyrics. It's a straightforward punk rock song and I love the way Joey Ramone says banana in this song. Here it is:

In 2003, Johnny Ramone himself was presented with the idea of bands doing covers of Ramones songs. He agreed as long as he had full control. Rob Zombie contributed album art, and Stephen King (a long time Ramones fan) wrote the liner notes. It includes bands such as KISS, Garbage, Marilyn Manson, Metallica, U2, Green Day, Eddie Vedder, among others. Johnny Ramone liked The Red Hot Chili Peppers version of Havana Affair so much, that the album opened with that song. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a bit of a different take on the song. Their version is more nuanced, more rock, less punk so it has a bit of a mellow vibe to it. I love the guitar especially. I love the Ramones but I do prefer the cover from Red Hot Chili Peppers myself. Here it is.
Lyrics:
PT-boat on the way to Havana
I used to make a living, man
Pickin' the banana.
Now I'm a guide for the CIA
Hooray for the USA!

Baby, baby, make me a loco
Baby, baby, make me a mambo

Sent to spy on a Cuban talent show
First stop- Havana au go-go
I used to make a living, man
Pickin' the banana
On January 4th, The Red Hot Chili Peppers unveiled their latest 7" single for the songs Pink as Floyd and Your Eyes Girl. These songs are from the sessions that brought us 2011's I'm With You album. These are basically songs that didn't make the album. These songs are getting more experimental as time goes on. The band is sounding tighter than ever and Josh is a great addition to the band. First the song Pink As Floyd:

As the title suggests, this is a bit of an homage to Pink Floyd. There are very nice spacey strings in this song, and I have never heard anything like it from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This song was played live on their recent tour, including one of the stops right here in Los Angeles. I really like this song and it's becoming one of my favorites. One of the most interesting choruses in a Chili Peppers song. Here are the lyrics

Coming up next is the song Your Eyes Girl, which you can hear right here:

This song could have fit in on One Hot Minute. There's a bit of profanity from Flea on here at the beginning. This is another somewhat trippy song and I could tell why it was chosen on this set. I love the guitar in this song, it's completely out there. Check out the songs and look for the next set of singles out next month. Here are handwritten lyrics for this song.
First new album in 10 years!! Premiere of Who Are We Now?

Today is David Bowie's 66th birthday. He gave us all a huge surprise yesterday by premiering his new single, Who Are We Now. This is huge news because we have not heard a note from him since 2003's album Reality. Many thought he had retired from music to spend time with his family. We were all wrong. Turns out, he recorded this album in secret with Tony Visconti, whom he had worked with before on previous albums. The song, which you can hear below,is a more mellow, somber tune reminiscent of his recent albums, ...hours and Heathen. It's a decent track, I'm more excited to hear the new album, which will be called The Next Day to be released on March 12th. This news is all so sudden. As you all know, Bowie is a lifelong influence for me so to hear anything new from him is outstanding news. The song is about Berlin, a subject Bowie knows well, as his trilogy of albums recorded with Brian Eno, (Low, Lodger, Heroes) was recorded there. These are ranked pretty high and I hope this new album does not disappoint. Listen to the single and judge for yourself.
Happy 2012!!Will Kilby here at Amongst the Soundwaves. This blog was basically created for myself, and my love of music. This year has been tremendous and has surprised me in more ways that I could have imagined. I started this blog in March, and it has been cathartic, helpful and calming. I love talking about the bands and music that I love. I have written over 100 entries since March and have acquired over 15,000 views during that time. It is truly a milestone and I could have not have done it without all of you. In the new year expect more top 20 lists, more music news, more videos, concerts, reviews, and anything music related I feel like posting. There are no rules to this. I post what I want, when I feel like it, it's a liberating feeling. When I look back on all the entries, I see how all the music from my youth have never went away. These bands are still touring, there are still people excited to hear new music from these bands, there is still an audience. This year has seen bands like Dead Can Dance, Smashing Pumpkins, The Swans, Men Without Hats, and the like come back with some of the best albums of their career. It has seen veteran singers like Leonard Cohen and Bob Mould release some of the most critically acclaimed albums of their career. While pop music continues it's downward spiral into nothingness, it is refreshing to see artists still out there, doing what they love, inspiring others, and still have great music. I end this year with some songs I'm listening to now. These are just some songs I have been listening to lately and look forward to hearing more from. It's great to get into an artist and see that they have around 13 albums! Music comes in cycles and music from 2012 has been no exception. I may be set in my ways, it's hard for my to get into newer music, perhaps, because I can see through the bs in modern music. There was a genuine punk spirit flowing through the 70s-90s music, even if the band's weren't punk, they still represented that independent spirit. This is what is lacking today. I hear lots of great albums being prepared for next year. Maybe one day we will get that Smiths and Husker Du reunion. Maybe 2013 will be the year. Only time will tell. Thank you all!!
The Smashing Pumpkins dominated this list with their reissued versions of their albums. Many included bonuses such as rare bsides, live dvds, etc... These are mostly for diehard fans who were already fans of the album, but it's a nice intro to new fans as well. Check it out.
10. Smashing Pumpkins - Pisces Iscariot

A bsides collection,
originally released in 1994, this collected the bsides and assorted
tracks from the Siamese Dream era of the band. This includes the
remastered album, a 2nd cd of cover songs, alternate versions of the
songs, demos from various studios. a DVD of a basement jam from 1988!
and even a casette tape of their first demo. Extremely expansive and
prolific!
09. Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights

Brooklyn-based Interpol get a 10 year anniversary reissue for their debut album Turn on the Bright Lights. This album was one of the most acclaimed of the early 2000s. The band has released ok to downright unlistenable albums since then, but this remains their shining hour. Along with the original remastered album, is a 2nd disc of b-sides, demos and an early EP.

08. Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine

One of the most important records of the 90s. This marks the bands 20 year anniversary for this album and it comes in the form of this remastered album. Disc 1 has the remastered album and disc 2 contains bsides from that era, and early demo tracks. It's a nice look into songs like Bombtrack and Killing in the Name. Also included is a DVD with live concert footage and music videos.

07. REM - Document/Life's Rich Pageant

Both of these albums were released before REM became household names with songs like Losing My Religion and Everybody Hurts. These two albums were a taste of things to come. Included with Lifes Rich Pageant is the Athens demos, some rough drafts of early songs which would later appear on the album, on the Document reissue is a live concert from Holland from 1987.

06. Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground and Nico

Perhaps the most influential band in history, behind the Beatles, The Velvet Underground return this year with a reissue of their acclaimed 1967 album. Yes, it has been reissued before, but this 6 disc version has a little bit of everything from this era. You get the stereo and mono mixes from the album, Nico's Chelsea Girl album, the Scepter Studios Sessions, which includes demos of the songs from the album, and the last two discs includes a live concert from this era, which is a rarity. A very extensive box set from a legendary band.

05. Sugar - Copper Blue

Former Husker Du frontman Bob Mould would return in the 90s as a powerpop and punk icon. This Sugar record is one of the best of that era. If I Can't Change Your Mind would become a radio staple and this record would sell more than any previous Husker Du album. Also included is the Beaster EP, demos and a live concert. Bob Mould also toured this year in support of this album where his band played it in its entirety.

04. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

My Bloody Valentine's 2nd album is full of bliss and distortion. This is the best way to describe this record to newcomers. Feedback is all around this record and one song flows into the next. Leader Kevin Shields has not released anything new since this record. It's been 20 years with constant rumors of new music from this but this record remains their masterpiece. Many of the bands on Projekt Records (Love Spirals Downwards, Mira, Autumn's Grey Solace, Tearwave) owe a huge debt to this album. This 2cd reissue has the original album and a remastered version by Kevin Shields.

03. Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness

Mellon
Collie & the Infinite Sadness was a major album when it was
first released. A double CD at a time when many bands were not even
attempting anything close. This new reissued 5 CD version expands on
those original 28 tracks, including many songs which would later appear
on The Aeroplane Flies High box set, instrumental and different vocal
takes on songs that were on the original Mellon Collie album, and
bsides, many of which were not heard until now. Also included is a live
concert from that era. If you are a completest like me, get this album.

02. The Smiths - Complete

Coming from Manchester (the same scene which gave us the Buzzcocks, Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays and other great bands), The Smiths quickly became one of the most influential bands in British history, acquiring a cult-like fanbase due mostly to Morrissey's lyrics and Johnny Marr's innovative guitar playing. Though they only lasted for 5 years from 1983-1987, they were very prolific and you can find all their work here. Included are their 4 studio albums, a live album, and 3 compilation albums, which had many fan favorites all on vinyl and CD. If you want the complete picture of The Smiths, get this set.

01. Smashing Pumpkins - Gish/Siamese Dream

The Smashing Pumpkins debut album, and 2nd album, co-produced by Butch Vig, gets an expansive reissue in 2011, but it came late in the year so I'm reviewing it now. Coming from Chicago, Smashing Pumpkins sounded like no other band and still sound fresh today. Ever the perfectionist, it has been rumored that Billy Corgan played all the guitar and bass on both albums. Both are very intense, strong albums, these albums had psychedelic flourishes, My Bloody Valentine-like fuzzy guitars and one of the best drummers on earth in Jimmy Chamberlin. Both include a remastered version of the album, a 2nd CD of demos and alternate tracks, and bsides, a live concert DVD and it comes in a beautiful box with new artwork.
This was the year of comebacks and return to forms for many bands. We saw some surprisingly awesome albums from bands I hadn't thought of in years, along with some great ones from some veterans in the music world. Here is my top 20 of the year. Happy new year guys! Can't wait to see what 2013 will bring!

#20 The Cult - Choice of Weapon

A great rock record! On this record, the band has found their true sound after years of mediocrity. Yes, this is the best record since Love many years ago. Ian Astbury still has his trademark range and Billy Duffy continues to be one of the best guitarists today. Listen to this record along with Love and Sonic Temple, it is right on that level of greatness.
Notable tracks: For The Animals, Elemental Light, The Wolf

#19 - Green Day - Uno, Dos, Tre

Yes, these are actually 3 albums but to be honest, there is a lot of filler on all these albums. This ended up making my top 20 because between all that, there is a tight, decent album in here. The band returns with 3 new albums, all released within about 2 months of each other. This band has been extremely prolific as of late, also working on the American Idiot broadway play and a documentary. There are many classic Green Day classic songs, with other ones sounding like homages to their heroes The Clash, blues, and even country sounding songs. There are also songs that have a bit of a 60s vibe to them, which recalls their other group Foxboro Hot Tubs (we need a new album someday guys) While not the masterpiece albums like Insomniac, Dookie, or Nimrod are, it is good to see Green Day is a band that is getting harder and harder to pin down.

Notable tracks: Nuclear Family, Lazy Bones, Sex Drugs and Violence
#18 Bat For Lashes - The Haunted Man

Looking at the album cover for The Haunted man gives you an image of the music within. Naked, bare, with someone to carry you. Yes, Natasha Khan does sound more like herself on this record. she has said this record was about her family history, she herself a mix of Pakistani and British. This does carry echoes of her 80s contemporaries Kate Bush and the Cure, both being artists which pushed the envelope and were extremely hard to pin down. Bat For Lashes is another. The song laura is a standout track, Natasha brings out the piano on this ballad, which was cowritten by justin parker, who has written songs for Lana Del Ray. A step forward for Bat For lashes, I expect more great works from them in the future.

#17 My Dying Bride - A Map Of All Our Failures

My Dying Bride is one of the most consistent doom metal bands out there. While their contemporaries have gone a more progressive metal or alternative rock path, My Dying Bride have never really deviated from their doom/death metal path, albeit 34.788 was a bit of a change. This record has the same familiar themes of romanticism, melodic leads and dramatic lyrics. I especially love the use of violin on this record, it's there in the background, yet never seems overwhelming.
Notable tracks: Kneel Till Doomsday, Hail Odysseus, Like A Perpetual Funeral

#16 Garbage - Not Your Kind of People

Produced right here in Atwater Village and Glendale, this album is rocking and angry in all the right ways. The band, especially producer and drummer Butch Vig create such noisy atmospheres and hallucinagenic sounds which bring you to an otherwordly place. This is a return to their 1998 album, Version 2.0, after the more pop driven Beautiful Garbage and their previous tepid album, Bleed Like Me. Both albums were missing that energy and angst of their selftitled and Version 2.0. This is good to see a band sticking to it's guns and creating one of the best albums of their career.
Notable tracks: I Hate Love, Felt, Blood For Poppies

#15 Silversun Pickups - Neck of The Woods

Excellent follow up to their previous album. This sees the band going in different directions, including synthpop and rock. This is a nice companion to Smashing Pumpkins recent album Oceania. A very underrated album. This album begs to be played loud!I love their use of synths on this record, which is a change for them. The band have compared this album to a horror movie, which is fitting because it's full of twists, turns, quiet moments and in-your-face suspense.
The electronic side project of AfI's Davey Havok and Jade Puget, this follow up to 2009's Cexcells, sees the band continuing their foray into 80s inspired synthpop and industrial darkwave. This album was actually recorded years ago when the band was recording cexcells, so many songs continue on the same theme of that record. Love, longing, Jade Puget's electronics and Davey's vocals are always spectacular.
Soundgarden are back! After a string of disappointing solo albums, and a few Audioslave releases, chris cornell and the boys from Seattle release one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year. Chris Cornell has never sounded better, Kim Thayil proves to be one of the best guitarists in rock ever. wailing choruses, rocking guitars, it feels like the 90s never left us.
Tom Shear's Assemblage 23 is a staple in the electronic music genre. All the familiar themes are here, layered synths, introspective lyrics and intense beats. The album is called bruise and there is definitely a theme of damage and overcoming scars. One of their most emotional albums to date. One of the criticisms of previous releases was a lack of confidence as far as vocals go. It's good to see Tom finally become more confident in his delivery, and this album is catchy, mature and never cheesy. A step up from 2009's Compass.
Earlier this year, Merge Records reissued all of the albums from Sugar, Bob Mould's post-Husker Du band. That band was the perfect mixture of punk energy and poppish hooks. This new record, Silver age could be the missing Sugar album. Even at 52, Bob Mould still has the energy and wit of people half his age. This record taps into a certain nostalgia for me, especially because I believe that Sugar is one of the 90s most underrated bands, who were extremely catchy and had amazing lyrics. This album recalls all that was great about Sugar but with a wiser edge. Bob Mould is back and in a brilliant way
Billy Corgan and his current crew returns with one of their best records in over a decade. After stumbling with Zwan, and his solo record, along with a lackluster "comeback" album with Zeitgeist in 2007, it's good to have Billy back, albeit with hired help. This album is one of the most ambitious things Corgan has done in a long time, full of sweeping melodies, soaring choruses and a voice like no one else, Corgan is a man who doesn't care what you think. The main themes on this album are enlightenment, love, and knowledge. Corgan has been to hell and back, this record sees Billy corgan as someone you have never seen before, optimistic. Great record and a comforting return.

Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio returns with this album, a sort-of follow up to 2011's This Addiction. This record is a true rock record, though Matt has said he was influenced by postpunk bands on this record and it shows. The album is full of nice synth harmonies and lyrically it touches on familiar grounds:demons, bloody hands, etc.. If you were a fan of Matt Skiba's side project Heavens, this is the record for you. This is somewhere between an 80s goth rock album and pop punk. Good mixture of songs.
Canadian punk band Propagandhi have sure come a long way. From their debut as a NOFX-style pop punk beginnings to their current punk meets metal sound, this band have always maintained an aura of realness which is lacking in many punk circles. This is the band's first album on punk label Epitaph, and from the opening track to the last, the energy never lets up. This is an evolution for the band that I expect to hear more from. For many bands, getting older means becoming more mellow, but for Propagandhi it's the exact opposite, they just keep getting better.
Rush's best album since Moving Pictures. This also marks Rush's first concept album in over 30 years. The concept is "an individual trying to follow his dreams in a dystopian future" Rush are true survivors. While many of their contemporaries either broke up, or became irrelivant, Rush soared on, and this album is no different. Their lyrics have never been better thanks to Neil Peart. This album is full of references to prayers, miracles, angels. There is a novel to coincide with this album to be released next year. I cannot wait! This album rocks from beginning to end. A very heavy record, there is something here for everyone, to the Rush fanatic to the casual fan. This is a record that doesn't really stand out when you hear individual tracks. It works better as a whole. Listen to the whole record to get more of a grasp on the story. Highly recommended.
Cohen's strongest work since the 80s. This sees Leonard at his most confessional. The 77 year old has lived a long life and here are his tales. Many songs are about despair, loneliness and realization. Before Leonard talked about his personal life, the Suzannes and Mariannes in his life, now he speaks in a more universal language. Cohen is an old soul, and a true legend, a poet, a singer, a slave for love and as he puts it "a lazy bastard". This album reminds me of the late Johnny Cash's last few albums. Very quiet, with a voice full of age and yearning.
A return to form for Marilyn Manson after the hit-and-miss of their previous records. Having been dropped from their label, Interscope, to join the independent label Cooking Vinyl, this record feels like a rebirth for the band. This album sees the band at its most diverse, incorporating elements of glam rock, punk rock, post punk and even blues at times. One element of this record, which really hasn't appeared on previous ones are the incredible basslines and choruses. The band was written off a while back, but this record brings a new energy and spirit and rebirth. Not only a great record, one of the best for the band and of the year.
Excellent follow up to 2010's Harm's Way. Michael Halloway continues to push the envelope of industrial music. This album sees Dead When I found her advancing to a more original sound. This is a throwback to the industrial music I grew up listening to, yet still maintaining an original synth sound. Michael is one of the most creative forces in goth/industrial music today. Their first album was more similar to Skinny Puppy, this sees them exploring new territory. This record, I would say is more similar to Tear Garden, more experimental, creating a dark atmosphere with haunting lyrics. I look forward to more from Michael Halloway.
This is not an album to play in the background while engaged in other activities. This 2 hour, 2 cd album begs to be listened to intently without distraction. The title track is nearly a half hour long. this was unlike any other album released this year. This is the first album from Swans which features special guests, including Low, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and yes, even the one and only Jarboe, making this a reunion of sorts for her and Michael gira. After hearing this album, I was exhausted. I assume this was the goal for this record. This record is heavy and cathartic and one i would only recommend to fans of the band. Very personal, a very loud record.
Who would have thought that this band known mostly as a one-hit wonder here in the US, would have their greatest album released in 2012!? But yes, Canada's own Men Without Hats have reached their creative peak with this, their latest album, Love in The Age of War. This album has a bit of a darker, more cynical vibe than previous releases. Produced by Marilyn Manson/Skinny Puppy producer, Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, this album is darker than previous ones, but will still have you singing it's catchy choruses. Synths, drums, emotional vocals throughout. This is one of the best albums of this year, no doubt about it.
What more can I say about this record? My top album of the year. Hearing these songs live made me love them more. The band took a break after 1996, Lisa did a ton of soundtrack work, Brendan Perry worked with other artists such as Piano Magic and Zoar, along with releasing a few solo records of their own. Anastasis is a return to form from the band, the word meaning rebirth in Greek. Lisa sings in her trademark glossolalia style, where Brendan sings in a more traditional English style. The highlight of the album is Return of the She-King, a rare duet featuring both of them. Dead Can Dance has always been a band that defied conventions and trends. This album is reflective of that. This album was my highlight of the year. Seeing the energy these two perform live is so magical. It really is hard to put into words how intense this band is, which is something I think Dead can Dance has always achieved. Without a doubt, the album of the year.
To really hear an artist's work, you must look past the hit singles. The
entire album is worth hearing to truly get a glimpse of it all in one
body of work. Here are some of the albums I am listening to this week.

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine (1992) reissue (2012)

Rage Against the Machine's debut album was recently reissued this week with an extra cd of demo versions of songs from this album and rare unheard songs. Also, on the first cd, there are 3 live tracks. There is also a DVD of live tracks and music videos from this era. This is very similar to the recent Smashing Pumpkins reissue with the extra cd and demos. This album only rivals Nevermind and Ten for influencial standpoints in 90s rock. This band melded politics, rap, rock, and a punk attitude, I really like the early demo versions of the album. Check it out!
Against Me is a band from Florida who have been around since the early 2000s. This is their major label debut, which was produced by the great Butch Vig, who has previously produced such seminal albums such as Nirvana's Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream. Fans of Billy Bragg and The Clash would love them. They have a mixture of folk and punk, this album is more polished than their previous album but that's more due to Butch Vig's involvement. White People For Peace is a great song, agaggressive song which is one of their best known tracks and they continue to play to this day. Stop is another great crowd pleaser, though it sounds a bit like disco at times. This band is full of diversity and yes, they may not be a straight up punk band anymore but this is a band doing their own thing. Here are some track to look for:

Soundgarden's first album since 1996's Down On The Upside sees the band evolving forward. Since 1996, vocalist Chris Cornell has travelled many paths. He fronted the band Audioslave with the relics of Rage Against the Machine, he has released a few solo albums, including the questionable 2009, Timbaland-produced Scream, and now Soundgarden is finally band. This albums sees Soundgarden returning to a familiar hard rock sound, as seen on the songs Been Away Too Long and Blood on The Valley Floor. It's good to see these guys finally coming back and breathing new life into a rock scene which desperately needs it. Here are a few standout tracks:
The holiday season is upon us, which means many radio stations will be subjecting you to horrible Christmas music and you will hear endless renditions of Silver Bells, Jingle Bells and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Despite all the terrible, Christmas music out there, there are a few gems. The Pogues' Fairytale of New York (featuring Kristy Maccoll) is one of them. It's hard to believe it, but the song came out 25 years ago, in 1987. There is a reissue coming out this year according to the Pogues facebook page. It will include the original version, instrumental and video coming out on November 26th. A white vinyl version will be released on December 3rd. Here is that amazing song, once again.

R.E.M. may have broken up a year ago but it hasn't stopped them from making music videos. This latest clip came out a few weeks ago. It's a very trippy, hypnotic video with spoken lyrics by Michael Stipe and singing by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Patti Smith. The video is directed by James Franco (of Freaks and Geeks fame) and features Lindsay Lohan and also has James Franco himself...in drag. Those living in Los Angeles will see some familiar sights in the video including the Roosevelt Hotel and the Roxy club. Enjoy!

Last week, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have released "Hometown Gypsy" and "The Sunset Sleeps" the fourth pair of singles released in conjunction
with the band's 18-track singles series announced in August. All these songs come from the sessions which produced last years Grammy-nominated I'm With You album. There are 5 more 7" singles left to go. The next pair of singles are Your Eyes Girl and Pink as Floyd, which is set to be released on January 4th. Hometown Gypsy is a bit of a departure for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it has more of a country vibe to it, kinda like a Ghost Riders in the Sky vibe. The Sunset Sleeps is a midtempo song, very psychedelic, chill type of song. I like it. I'm liking how diverse these pairs of singles have been so far. Check them out!
Morrissey looked visably uncomfortable in this interview on the Stephen Colbert show, which is funny considering that Morrissey has mentioned in the past what a fan he was of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. Stephen constantly prods at Morrissey and Morrissey responds as he usually does. Completely serious. Here is the interview and 2 songs Morrissey performed.
Billie Joe Armstrong is a busy guy. He is mostly known as the lead singer of Green Day but he is a member of at least 3 other bands including this one. Other bands he is a member of are Foxboro Hot Tubs and The Network. Pinhead Gunpowder play straightforward punk rock. Not as poppish as Green Day but the voice is very recognizable. This is more similar to the music they did around the 39 Smooth/Kerplunk days and is sure to please fans of that or any other bands on Lookout Records. If you like punk rock and like Green Days most punk songs, check this album out. Here are some great songs on here:

Oingo Boingo's second album, released on A&M Records in 1982. This album is a bit more louder and has more of an abrasive tone compared to their debut, Only A Lad. This further cements Danny Elfman as a brilliant songwriter. The band's mix of ska, new wave and experimental music was unheard of at the time and this release is a prime example of this. This features some classic Oingo Boingo songs such as Nothing To Fear and Private Life. Here are some of my favorite songs from this album.
Not exactly a new album for Tori Amos. This album includes songs which were on previous Tori Amos albums but now done for an orchestral arrangement. This includes songs on most of her solo albums, with the exception of To Venus and Back, The Beekeeper, Strange Little Girls and Night of Hunters. There are some really interesting versions of Silent All These Years, Precious Things and Gold Dust. This album is a must have for any fan of Tori. It's like hearing these songs for the first time. Here are some of my favorites.

One of the best rock albums of the 90s. This includes the hit songs Lightning Crashes, All Over You, I Alone, Selling The Drama and White, Discussion. This remains Live's best selling album to date. Incredible lyrics, less based on Eastern philosophy than their previous release, Mental Jewelry. It was one of the first CDs I owned so it is a special album to me. They, along with REM, and Smashing Pumpkins really defined the 90s and rock in general. A must have for any collection. Here are some of the best songs:
Hitting stores this week is the soundtrack to Tim Burton's er... new? film Frankenweenie. The original Frankenweenie short directed by Tim Burton came out in 1984, I guess Tim needs to remake things nowadays, even his own works. The soundtrack seems pretty interesting (the score of course is done by Danny Elfman). The soundtrack includes contributions from Plain White T's covering the Ramones classic Pet Semetary, Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs does a song and Flaming Lips have a track on here. The standout though is Robert Smith of The Cure. In a previous entry, I talked about Peter Murphy and Stan Lee covering the Frank Sinatra song That Old Black Magic. Well, another goth pioneer Robert Smith is now covering another Frank Sinatra song, Witchcraft. Check it out!
